RUBY HALL CANCER CENTER
Animal Angels Foundation conducted a project for Cancer patients at Ruby Hall Clinic where Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) was used to improve their quality of life of the Cancer Patients. This was the first time that any hospital in India had allowed a therapy dog to enter its premises. Myself and Therapy dog Kiara (Golden Retriever) along with volunteers of Animal Angels conducted a demo session for the Cancer Patients at Ruby Hall Clinic. Therapy dog Kiara was made to interact with the patients (mostly patients undergoing radiation), their relative and also the doctors and the supporting sta ff. It was a pleasant change for the patients and for the sta ff.
We also made a visit to the Christmas Party arranged for pediatric patients at Ruby Hall Cancer Canter, Pune. Therapy dog Kiara was dressed up as Santa with a red T-shirt and a Santa cap. Children were thrilled to see and meet Kiara. They forgot their pain and reached out to pet her. Parents told us that their children were much more expressive and happy with Kiara. Even the doctors and parents present at the party, enjoyed Kiara’s presence. Even now when I go to the hospital doctors and nurses ask me about Kiara’s next visit. This is indeed a big step for AAT in India (it took me almost a year to convince the hospital authorities)
Recently we conducted a special program with Cancer Patients Aid Association Pune. It was a program for women Cancer Patients on the occasion on International Womens Day. We had arranged for an Animal Assisted Activity session for the women patients who had come from various hospitals all around Pune like Command Hospital, Sasoon Hospital, Ruby Hall etc. Therapy dog Kiara was introduced to them and taken to each one of them for interaction.
Many of the women patients had come to Pune from far off place like Aasam for treatment and were suffering from depression. Interacting with Kiara, they forget their sorrows and pain for a while and enjoyed the unconditional love that Kiara gave them. This is the principal of Animal Assisted Therapy where the unconditional love and the soothing touch of animals help you to forget your pain and improve the patient’s quality of life.
