DAVID SASSOON INDUSTRIAL SCHOOL, MAHIM, MUMBAI
2012
David Sassoon Industrial School, established in 1843, is run by the Children’s Aid Society. Located in a heritage building in the suburbs of Mumbai, this school is a residential facility for the children who are convicted by the court or referred by the court for delinquency or observation.
Delinquency is often a consequence of unfavorable experience. Therefore, this School is a socialized Treatment Centre. Besides providing opportunities for acquisition of skills, the focused of this institution is development of appropriate character structure among deviant boys.
Animal Angels had the opportunity to introduce a unique 10 session pilot program for the children of this center. Considering the issue of delinquency, the primary goal of the Animal Therapy program was to develop empathy and compassion in the children. Most acts that get these children in trouble with law are because of this lack of empathy, compassion and caring for others. Interaction with Therapy dog Goldie (golden retriever) and Therapy dog Coco (Labrador) gave these children an opportunity to be who they are. Most of the times these children have to pretend to be tough, strong, not caring for others, but in front of the therapy dog, they did not need to pretend. They shared their fears and aspirations with Goldie. Program head- Aakash Lonkar said that these children would hardly ever get a chance to be treated like ‘normal kids’. But with Goldie, they could be that. Their favorite activity was to tell stories to Goldie. Therapist Bansari Pandya says that on kid, on the last session said to Goldie ‘For you Golide, I am willing to change’.
