JIDDA SCHOOL FOR MENTALLY CHALLENGED-THANE
2003-2009.
TMC’s Dharmaveer Anand Dighe Jidda School is a dedicated school for the mentally challenged with associated disabilities. Situated in the peaceful locale of Vasant Vihar, Thane. Looked after by the Thane Municipal Corporation, this school caters for the development of these children in all directions.
Jidd’s Pawsitive Animal therapy program was the first ever Animal Assisted Therapy program and research study for the mentally retarded in India. Here the first documented research on Animal Therapy in India which was conducted by Mrs. Minal Lonkar – Kavishwar. It was only possible due to the vision of the Principle Mrs Shyamashree Bhosle who gave full support and co-operation for this project.
Kutty – a 5 year old golden Labrador, the first therapy dog of India, is a pet of the Bhosle family. She comes to the school with the Principle, is there in the school throughout the school hours, stands with the children for the prayers, plays with them, assists them and is the proud ANIMAL ANGELS’ THERAPY DOG.
She was trained by Minal specially to be a therapy dog since she was four months old. Kutty has an amazing capacity to understand these children. She knows her work and her responsibility very well. She is full of love and compassion for these children. She gives them the much needed happiness and brings smiles on their faces.
She is there when they need a warm hug or just want someone to be there with them. She plays with children in wheelchairs, understands the children who cannot speak, crippled children hold her leash and walk around the school.
Therapy dog Kutty and Minal Kavishwar, registered as first Pet Partners from India with Delta Society, USA were awarded the Beyond Limit Award by Delta Society for best practicing professional team. (petpartners.org)
We lost Kutty in 2013 due to health complications. She was 10 years old and cared for dearly by the Bhosle family till the end. She has brought happiness and has changed the lives of many children. May God bless her soul.
