MOOKADHWANI SCHOOL , VILE PARLE
2007-2010
Mookdhwani is a school for children with hearing and speech impairment in Vile Parle, Mumbai. The school is run by Utkarsha Mandal which aims at providing various therapies to these children.
Therapy dog Aekon (Chocolate Lab) was the visiting dog who visited the school once a week to interact with the children. They helped the elder children in dealing with emotional and behavioral problems. He also worked with the smaller kids to open up and to express them.
Animal Angels volunteers Dr. Shweta Sohoni a physiotherapist and Madhura Lonkar a psychology student, conduct the therapy sessions with Aekon, focusing on the speech and expression of the children.
The Animal Therapist along with the help of a teacher, taught the children different commands based on sign language and body language, which they practice with Aekon. Teachers at the school gave a feedback that these children, who would sometimes feel misfit among their own siblings or friends who can speak, would find it easy to communicate with Aekon as they did not need words to establish an emotional connect with him.
