PRASANNA AUTISM CENTER-PUNE
2006-2009
Prasanna Autism Center is a dedicated organization, headed by Mrs. Padmaja Godbole and is aimed at making every day a ‘Prasanna Day’ (joyous day) in the lives of the autistic children. It had been a long-standing dream and vision of Mrs. Padmaja Godbole. The main objective is to undertake and monitor all such activities, which would help to improve the general awareness of society at large, to treat children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and counsel the parents. Prasanna aspires to be a center unique in its ways and methods in helping parents and professionals understand and manage autistic spectrum disorders (ASD).
Therapy dog Sophie, a brown Labador, was trained to be the in-house therapy dog specially for the center. She stayed with the Godbole family and worked with the children in the center. Her spirited presence helped non-verbal, non-responsive children to notice her, thus leading to improvement in eye cont act and speech. A lot of children who had crying spells and sensory issues benefited by Sophie’s presence. For many non-verbal children, ‘Cho-pie’ was their first ever word.
This was the first AAT based program conducted by Animal Angels in Pune. This program was an in –house therapy dog program, backed by research data. The research program consisted of training an in-house therapy dog, providing therapy to the autistic children at the center, documenting the changes and training the sta ff and students in AAT.
A paper presentation ‘Animal Assisted Therapy and Autism’ based on the documented results of the therapy program at Prasanna was done at the International Conference on Psychology held at NIMHANS Bangalore in July 2007.
” We have seen tremendous change in the children due to Sophie’s mere presence. She is a big help in calming down agitated and crying children. We have also seen a big improvement in their eye cont act and expression levels. For many children ‘SOPHIE’ is the first word they have spoken.” -Mrs. Padmaja Godbole
